When MTV.com went full Flash twelve years or so ago, it was the coolest thing ever on the Web. With Flash, you could see full screen animations with innovative navigations (plus audio/video) on their Web site. Personally, I learned Flash because I wanted to do cool stuff on the Web.

Twelve years later, Flash is still a main component on the internet. Though, Flash is not as user friendly on mobile due to various limitations, and Apple snubbed Adobe by disallowing Flash support when the iPhone came out back in 2007 .

The emergence of HTML5 provides Web developers an alternative to create cool stuff on both Web and mobile platforms. Today, Adobe releases a public preview of Adobe Edge — an interaction design tool similar to Flash that could bring the Web to life without Flash.

Based on initial feedback from Adobe, it seems like both Edge and Flash will coexist at least for now. However, nothing is guaranteed in the technology world, and we will see what more HTML5 can do in the near future.

(P.S. MTV.com dumped full Flash in 2007.)
