New Packaging Options for Mobility of Sensitive Materials

1. Briefly describe your Problem Statement

- The current packaging of products for easier and safer mobility is sufficient for ordinary, user-friendly materials. However, it is quite inadequate for sensitive or fragile substances including health care medicals, brittle glassware, and liquids.

- The conventional methods of heavy packaging involve the usage of cardboard boxes, plastics, and airbags to ensure that the movement of objects is reduced.

  • A solution in package design which works out to be a cost-efficient and easier method to transport fragile and sensitive products to replace the existing packaging options is required.

2. What are the benefits or gains from having this problem solved?

-Affordable packaging services for expensive and sensitive materials preventing any damage.

-Easy to use and reduces current operating costs.

-Accessible and available to store and transport fragile substances and specific products

-E-commerce firms can benefit hugely and the novel packaging can be

beneficial for bulk transfer.

3. Which among the different beneficiaries will benefit the most?

Primary beneficiary:

  • E-commerce companies
  • Cargo shipments
  • Food and Healthcare Industries

Secondary beneficiary:

  • Packaging services for armed forces -instruments etc.
  • Direct customers/Individuals

4. What are the key constraints that have to be considered in attempting to solve this problem?

  • Costs of the new packaging material/device should be comparable to existing options
  • Comparable operating cost.
  • Material/device used should be able to be reused or recycled. If this is not possible, the solution should not be toxic or harmful to the environment in any way.

5. What is the minimum set of features/functionality (Minimum Usable Prototype) that will be acceptable as a solution?

  • A material or system which is strong and resistant to damage.
  • The solution should be adaptable to different shapes of objects and different forms, including liquids. It should be reusable for each of these as well.
  • Robust and reliable for fragile materials and liquids.
  • High durability and comparable weight to current solutions.
  • Ability for users to customize the packaging to reflect their brand identity or give specific details about the product.

6. What resources would you recommend as being highly critical to fast-track the problem solving as well as make the solution more effective?

Sources available for information on existing liquid packaging:

7. Briefly describe the market and business potential you foresee (and could potentially estimate) if this problem were to be solved.

  • The packaging sector has an immense demand and potential since it is an essential operational step across several interdisciplinary fields.Very limited sources are available as options at present with the rising shortage of conventional materials. Also, several novel, yet sensitive products are being developed and the current scenario demands new packaging materials which ensure safety and are cost-efficient.The potential cost cutting can be beneficial to the industry segments.
  • The solution could be licensed or sold to existing e-commerce companies. Revenue could be generated from selling/licensing packaging to these firms and to specific industries.
