I’m a Creative But I’m Jealous of Artists.
The tangibility that comes with being an illustrator, a painter or a designer. I am a very creative person but in thought and process, not particularly through works of art. It took me a while to realize this and it isn’t fair because a creative professional is expected to have a portfolio page. If you are a producer and entrepreneur, what does that mean?
In my quest to fit into a more acceptable definition of creative, I have taken art classes, music classes, dance classes. People I have met at different stages of my life have known me as a singer or an actor. In film school again, I based my self worth as a creative on my camera skills. For a good amount of time, I believed that a filmmaker is one who always wields a camera. I almost felt guilty for not whipping out a camera every time the sun set or taking a camera with me on trips. ‘You’re a filmmaker, isn’t this your thing?’ I happen to be someone who really enjoys things in the moment. Also, I doubt I will be looking back at a picture of this sunset. The only pictures that are reviewed again & again are my selfies.
We don’t celebrate the mind and ideas enough. As you can see, the creative mind needs to not just figure out a means of expression but also a means of fitting that into society. Society is your audience and if you don’t think of your audience, what is your creativity worth, right?
WRONG. There’s a difference between thinking of and appealing to your audience. I think you don’t embrace your creativity until you let go of this notion to please. Take inspiration from society. Look at the issues, study trends, follow your intuition in guiding you to the theme of your project. And then, retreat.
Would have never thought an SRK meme would be fitting to my thoughts, but here goes:
