Tech leadership: Focus on Process accountability
When people focus only on the outcomes, they have no incentive to break from the norm. They would follow the same patterns that have led to success in the past. They are more likely to take the shortest route to success. With outcome accountability, people invest only in things with guaranteed success. This is detrimental to learning and innovation.
To foster innovation and good decision-making in your team, focus on process accountability. Make people accountable for how they reached a decision. Researches show that people are more careful and thorough when they have to show their reasoning publicly. They are more likely to look at all the options. It forces people to think deeply and be thorough.
Example: ADR(The architectural decision record) and Request for comment (RFC).
