A Warm Winter in Taiwan

A picture of Taoyuan, Taiwan (桃園,台灣)

I took this picture from the balcony of my family’s apartment, 11 floors up. Although it doesn’t look or feel much like winter here, people in Taiwan have their own way of being festive.

A crowded mall in Taipei with Christmas decorations.

Christmas is not a national holiday in Taiwan—to most people their extent of Christmas would be decorations in malls, shops and parks.

Unlike more traditional Chinese holidays such as Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese Lunar New Year, Christmas is not considered as an important holiday for families to be together, even though some families might have their own traditions.

For example my family puts up a tree and gives presents to each other! Nevertheless, Christmas is still celebrated as a very casual and fun holiday.

I was in Taipei a few days ago, and every mall (including the one on the left) is fully covered with Holiday/winter themed decorations. Many people go to these malls to take pictures and shop with friends and families. Most shops also have some sort of Christmas-themed items on sale. You will also hear Christmas music everywhere you go! A lot of people also like dressing up with santa hats, or reindeer antlers.

Here is a 3o second video that shows a glimpse of what the holiday season feels like in Taiwan —lots of good food, Christmas decorations, night markets, traveling and fun!

No matter where you are in the world, and how you celebrate— Happy holidays, Broncos!
