Local News

A fair amount has been going on with the City of Santa Cruz. The City approved two projects along Pacific Avenue. The City is looking for ways to address the housing crisis. Mayor is doing a listening tour amongst a lot of local advocacy groups including Santa Cruz YIMBY!

The City of Santa Cruz is about to decide on some key policies late in the year including inclusionary zoning policies, downtown rezoning and maybe even corridor zoning.

The County of Santa Cruz is also in the process of updating their Accessory Dwelling Unit rules and is beginning a Strategic Plan update process. The City of Scotts Valley is also updating their general plan.

UCSC is making news as they try to move forward with the Student Housing West project which upon full completion will include 3,000 new beds for students! Santa Cruz YIMBY made it known in our meeting with the mayor that we strongly support upzoning near UCSC to allow more student housing to get built.

California State Housing Package

The legislators of the state of California passed and signed into law a package of bills aimed at addressing the housing crisis. We are very excited that among those bills, 2 of them were funding measures for developing below-market-rate housing. One of those funding measures will be a statewide bond that will be on the 2018 ballot, so expect to hear a lot more from us as we campaign to get that passed. There are a lot of other bills in the package and to be honest, we don’t know what affect they will all have just yet, but we’ll find out!
