The Merits of Startup Weekend

Hackathons, People, and Things.

Iron rusts from disuse, stagnant water loses its purity, and in cold weather becomes frozen; even so does inaction sap the vigors of the mind.

Startup Weekend touts itself as a launchpad for new ideas. A place for people to build something amazing. At the forefront of this promise of ideation, invention, and creative genius is the message of “No talk. All action.” If entrepreneurship is a game changer then Startup Weekend is playing the role of lead catalyst inspiring people to launch new startups.

Over 45,000 participants across the globe have braved the journey of launching a startup in 54-hours. A local organizer loves to describe Startup Weekend as “entrepreneurial madness” and I couldn’t agree more. However, the madness is real. It’s positive. It’s inspiring and it changes communities.

Right here in Santa Maria, California. Startup Weekend has helped to foster renewed energy for possibility and even led to the formation of a new company that is still in business today building traction at the intersection of nonprofits and business. However, there is much work to be done.

Ideas abound. Resources increase. Yet, opportunities remain for the right champions of entrepreneurship to inspire the globe.

Immersive hackathons like Startup Weekend are a step in the right direction bringing together people with ideas with the people who can help make them a reality. A few success stories along the way help to validate these awesome entrepreneurial experiences. The challenge lies in our ability as local champions to inspire the masses.

As one person wisely stated: “The most important people in the room are the ones who are not here.”

Entrepreneurship is a roller coaster ride.

Our mission is to bring others along for the journey.
