“Don’t ask questions. Just get a knife and a fork and a bottle of ketchup and follow me to the biggest barbecue in the whole world.”

This is the second in a three-part series that has been constructed for archival purposes here on Saoirse Ronan Deserves an Oscar. For years, I’ve kept spreadsheets about how the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys would go if I was the only one who voted for them. I loved the exercise so much that I went back into the 1930s, 1950s, and 1950s, respectively, to determine an entire history for each of them, in my view. This is an inherently meaningless practice, but as I found myself referencing the spreadsheets more in my writing, I thought I would transpose them to this website, so that we may always have a reference point and record book for them. I love lists too much not to. This is a completely self-indulgent exercise and you should feel no obligation to read them whatsoever. I just wanted to post them here for easier touchstones going forward, as someone who loves culture and lists in equal measure. (If you happen to have done the same, please share!)

This particular list is for the Emmys. There’s a few things that require explanation. I tried to keep things honest to my Shows of the Year lists and provided asterisks when I felt my opinions changed since 2018 or what have you. Speaking of 2018, I started doing my own Emmys here for the 2018–19 season, but this meant that I lacked the first half of 2018 there. For the sake of being inclusive (and confusing), I have Emmys categories for both 2018 (all of it) and 2018–19, as written about here, four years ago (man, time hurts). Sometimes, hindsight is unavoidable. I also did not include Guest Acting here for every year, but instead built a pantheon of guest performers from the history of television. They were not featured in the statistics section of the article, due to a bizarre skew. To be featured in the statistics section, I required a minimum of two wins or six nominations. However, there were much fewer television shows from the 1950s to the 1990s, so I grouped those by decades. That is why The Simpsons doesn’t have as many nominations as, say, Barry or Lucille Ball as Keri Russell. Consider this a historical almanac all the same. The categories and nominees do expand over time, as well, as more shows debut. Outstanding Special Achievement also morphs into Lifetime Achievement, as there are enough categories to cover all facets of television eventually. Again, please feel no obligation to read these, but they are now etched into Saoirse Ronan Deserves an Oscar history — and for good reason.
