This’ll be the one.

We have important news on the front of our endless campaign that Saoirse Ronan Deserves an Oscar! The first trailer for her next film, Ammonite, a period romance starring Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet, has debuted! Take a look.

In the three or four (math) years since I started this website, entitled Saoirse Ronan Deserves an Oscar, she’s made about three major plays into the realm of nabbing herself an Oscar. Lady Bird, Mary Queen of Scots, and Little Women resulted in two Oscar nominations and zero wins (sadly). (On Chesil Beach was not a big contender.) She definitely deserved two wins for those, in my opinion, but I think I’m biased. Regardless, she’s the second-youngest nominee in Oscar history with four under her belt (Atonement and Brooklyn, too) and she’s just twenty-six years old. She’s got plenty of time to change the title of this website forever.

I think Ammonite could be a good chance at doing so, though. Obviously, any esteemed movie she takes part in will garner consideration (The French Dispatch seems to be an ensemble piece, as opposed to the showcase of Ammonite), but this looks like a legit contender.

Plus, Ammonite comes in a scant year, due to the pandemic. If it’s a solid film (and we have no reason to think it won’t be), I can see a Neon Oscar campaign sending Saoirse straight to a nomination. In a non-contentious year, perhaps Saoirse’s finally due for her victory. Not that she needs it. After all, she’s well-proven as one of the best in her generation. It’s just that she deserves it.

Verdict: We’re keeping an eye on Ammonite and cautiously predicting good odds at a trophy next spring? No way. This is the one, y’all! This time next year, Saoirse Ronan will have an Oscar! Mark it!
