Air taxis for commuters, delivery drones for packages, supersonic travel between continents, and new frontiers of space exploration are all innovations that will shape our world in the next 30 years, according to the new Vision 2050 study from the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA).

At SAP Aerospace & Defense Innovation Days 2019 in sunny Seattle, Rusty Rentsch from AIA, outlined key points from the study and described the way to what’s next for the aerospace and defense industry.

What’s Next for Aerospace and Defense: A Vision for 2050 looks at the opportunities the A&D industry will face in the future, painting a picture of life in 2050. In addition to new speeds and modes of air travel and exploration, the report also outlines some of the challenges for A&D companies, including dynamic national security threats that loom on the horizon.

Despite these challenges, in the next 30 years, the A&D industry will be a driving force behind the way the world moves, connects, explores, and inspires. “We now have our idea of where we are in 30 years. The next step is to parse out what companies need to do in the next two to three years,” said Rentsch.

By 2025 Data Will Fuel A&D

As AIA’s 2050 Vision becomes more of a reality, big data will become increasingly important. Aerospace is already a data-centric industry, but data will be the fuel of the industry by 2025. With this emphasis on data, time to market for innovations will be dramatically reduced, as all innovation scenarios can be simulated along the complex value chain for optimized decision-making based on current and future environments.

Consistent business rules and the quality of data that is collected and distributed across the entire value chain will be key to laying a reliable foundation for the enterprise. An intelligent aerospace enterprise will have the tools to access different systems of records, manage the data explosion, and support decision-making based on simulation, AI, and data visualization. Next-generation automation processes will be fueled by data that can ease the natural tension between the current reality and the compelling vision.

While the intelligent enterprise is promising, achieving it will require leaders in the A&D industry and across the value chain to take action that will enable progress. These actions include some straightforward innovation, such as changing manufacturing processes. Others will require collaboration among stakeholders that will facilitate technological and infrastructure improvements.

Fortunately, some A&D leaders have already started this journey and they will be telling their stories at SAPPHIRE NOW 2019 — happening May 7–9 in Orlando, Florida. Be sure to include these insightful sessions in your A&D agenda:

SAP’s Role: The Intelligent Enterprise

A&D companies that digitally bridge current organizational and data silos will lead the industry. These companies will run integrated, automated processes that are transparent and connected to the real world. Intelligent aerospace enterprises will interact with their workforce differently. Technologies such as conversational AI allow for greater simplicity and efficiency to navigate through the maze of data. Boundaries will blur across the ecosystem, fostering effective collaboration and better-connected value chains.
