Exactly one year ago, I received a notification that I was accepted to participate in SAP’s Social Sabbatical 2018/2019 program and will spend 4 weeks in Dakar, Senegal in July 2019. That seemed to be so far away — but now the time has come.

Throughout the last weeks and months, we got to know the other SAP colleagues who will be part of the 12 people group (coming from all over the world and working in different departments and board areas) spending four weeks together in Senegal. With the support of Pyxera Global and SAP staff, we prepared for the Social Sabbatical on weekly calls covering topics such as social engagements in general, information about Senegal, and travel security.

Similar to the parallel cohort, that will spend 4 weeks in Laos (you can find a first blog post from Milja here), we had to come up with a team name and a motto. Based on the Senegalese proverb “The giant tree grows from a grain”, we named our team “Baobab” and selected “Together we help plant grains from which giant trees grow” as our team motto.

In one of the weekly calls, we found out the group of 12 will be split into 4 sub teams (3 people per sub team) that will be working with different clients onsite. The team I have the pleasure to work with consist of Muriel from Prague (CZ) and Tina from Tampa (US). We’ll be working together with CTIC Dakar, the first ICT incubator in Senegal, supporting the growth of Senegal’s best ICT small and medium enterprises. Our task during the 4 weeks onsite will be to determine how to collect and define metrics that will assess the performance of CTIC’s incubator over a defined period. This week we had our first client call to introduce ourselves and discuss initial questions about our tasks.

Now it’s only 10 more days until we all will arrive in Dakar, starting our 4 week adventure. Everyone is super excited and really looking forward to this experience.

I’ll share insights, stories and especially pictures from our journey to West Africa: Stay tuned!
