A week today I’ll be on a plane heading for Lima, Peru to start my SAP Social Sabbatical. This is a short-term volunteering assignment where 12 SAP employees will be working to solve strategic challenges for four NGOs.

What’s running through my mind right now? An awful lot of “eek”, mixed in with mega excitement, and an “am I really about to do this?”, finished off with a rather large dollop of “OMG, can I actually do this?”

If you’re anything like my “mother-in-law”, you’re probably asking “WHY?” Loads and loads of reasons why, and not one single sensible reason why not. Here are some in no particular order of importance:

· SAP and Pyxera Global gave me this amazing opportunity — thank you

· Where else do I get to use my business skills and experience on a voluntary basis?

· It’s not scratch-the-surface tourist stuff. I am going to be immersed in Peruvian culture, up close with the people, their concerns and needs, and getting an in-depth insight into their country, their issues, and their culture.

· I get to make the world a tiny bit better

· I get to learn new skills, meet new people, and help SAP run better by running better myself

· I get to kick my comfort zone in the a***– who’d have thought at my age? — so get ready for the new me (yes, it will still involve hard rock, metal, and medieval madness, but there will be loads more)

If all that isn’t enough, there’s the food — — it’s among the best in the world, don’t you know.

And for all you Paddington Bear lovers out there, maybe I’ll even get to meet his Aunt Lucy and Uncle Pastuzo in Lima.

And so much more — the magic is about to happen. If you’re just as eager as I am to find out what happens next, make sure to follow me here.

Now how on earth am I gonna get everything into that rucksack!!!!!
