Empowering Change: Reflecting on Week 1 of my Social Sabbatical in São Paulo, Brazil
Reflecting on my first week here in São Paulo, Brazil, as part of the Social Sabbatical program has been nothing short of exhilarating! The mix of nerves and excitement was palpable as I embarked on this journey, knowing that it would require stepping far beyond my comfort zone. But the thrill of diving into new experiences and learning opportunities has been absolutely invigorating.
Joining forces with Fundo Agbara, a remarkable non-profit organization dedicated to empowering Black Brazilian women with economic empowerment, has been an eye-opening experience. Witnessing firsthand the passion and determination within this small but mighty organization to combat economic inequality has left me inspired and in awe. I am humbled by their unwavering commitment to creating tangible change in their community.
During our first week, we had the privilege of meeting one of the women supported by Agbara during the COVID-19 pandemic. Silmara’s story is nothing short of remarkable. With the training and financial assistance she received, she was able to restart her ice cream shop and now, her business is flourishing. What’s even more inspiring is that Silmara has paid it forward by hiring another Black woman to help her with the growing business. Beyond the training and funds she received, Silmara shared that she developed confidence in her ability to bounce back from adversity and is now planning to move her shop to a bigger location in an upscale neighborhood.
Moreover, São Paulo itself has captured my heart with its vibrant energy and warm, welcoming people. From the bustling streets to the rich cultural tapestry woven throughout the city, every moment spent here feels like a new adventure waiting to unfold.
As I journey alongside my team members, Ina-Maria Hertweck and Monica Prudlo, I am eager to soak up every opportunity for growth, learning, and meaningful connection. Here’s to embracing the unknown and seizing each day with enthusiasm and gratitude. São Paulo, you’ve already left an indelible mark on my heart, and I can’t wait to see what the coming weeks have in store.
