SAP Social Sabbatical

In a couple of hours I will be leaving for Quito, Ecuador to begin my month of social sabbatical.

Every year SAP partners with Pyxera Global to offer short-term volunteering assignments around the globe to a number of employees. I will be part of a team of 12 lucky individuals to provide pro bono consulting services to several NGOs and non-profit organizations in Quito.

I have been flying around the world for various reasons since the age of 3 and have lived the greater part of my life outside my home country. Nowadays this may not seem very special (my daughter took her first flight when she was 3 months old) and most of us clock up more flight time on business trips and vacations than a junior pilot.

Things are different now with low cost travel, digital boarding passes, Uber, Cabify… But for me travel is still just as exciting. However I must admit that this time what I am feeling is quite different, in fact “excited” doesn’t even come close and I’ll explain why…

Be a small part of something great — I will have the opportunity to work with some of the people and organizations that will be shaping Ecuador’s future.

Team up with the best — the last 6 weeks of pre-work and preparation has reconfirmed my belief that what makes SAP great is it’s people. The team behind this program is nothing short of phenomenal. As for the other 11 members joining me in Quito, we have already “clicked” virtually and I am sure we will forge a lifetime relationship over the next 4 weeks.

Hold on to your hats, it’s gonna be intense! — only 4 weeks to deliver on some tough requirements. 12 individuals from different countries living under one roof. Being away from the kids and family for so long… There is bound to be some laughter and tears.

Last note before I take the cab. Nothing great happens at the office without 2 things. You need the support of your boss. Sorry Richard, I mean the real boss, my wife (you are amazing!). And the support of your colleagues - I have received a surprising number of inspiring messages of support over the last couple of days. Thank you and see you soon!
