Who knew peacocks could fly…

Last Friday was a bank holiday here in Sri Lanka which meant we had a long weekend! Sri Lanka celebrates Full Moon Poya Days as national holidays so they have twelve of these every year! Not bad…!

With four other team mates we hired a van with driver to bring us to Galle for the day and on elephant safari the next day. It was an interesting trip to say the least! Resilience of the team was tested to the max when we arrived at our accommodation for the night…How easy it is to forget that ratings on the usual sites really do mean something different in a developing country!!!

Thankfully both Galle and our safari were both spectacular each in their own right. One particularly amazing moment for me was to find the grave of my great grandmother in the Dutch Reformed Church of Galle! How cool is that??? She was the wife of the captain of a Dutch tea ship and passed away while they were ashore in Galle.

Here she is…

Udawalawe National Park thankfully also came up with the goods (had to get up at 4am!!) and we saw lots of elephants, water buffaloes etc. not to mention many beautiful peacocks and other exotics birds decorating the lush jungle canopy. It was magic.

All in all, this was a pretty full on weekend with very little sleep but many great memories made. Back in our little office here at the hotel this morning I must say I was feeling it a bit while preparing for yet another busy week ahead!

Note to self: Next weekend I will take it a little easier…I think…
