Marvel Burgess- Community Relations Coordinator

Today I was able to sit down with my Aunt, Marvel Burgess who is the Community Relations Coordinator at Geico. I wanted to get more insight on what she does as a professional. When I originally decided that I wanted to work in advertising, she was one of my inspirations. The things that she gets to do for her company are amazing. Although I have always had a general idea of what her job consisted of, I never knew what she did on a day-to-day basis. I decided to interview her and learn more about her job.

Sarah: Why did you choose this career path?

Marvel: I never knew that I would wind up in the career I am in now. I use to work at Icon, coordinating events and meetings. In 1999, I was approached by someone at Geico and offered the job of being a recruiter.

Sarah: How did you go from being a recruiter to the Community Relations Coordinator?

Marvel: I slowly started taking on some of the marketing and charity work for the company. Before long they trained someone else to do the recruiting so that I could be the full-time Community Relations Coordinator.

Sarah: What exactly so you do as the Community Relations Coordinator?

Marvel: I handle the advertising for the Macon branch of Geico. My job is to determine when ads need to be placed and work with the creation and implementation of the ads.
I am also in charge of Geico philanthropic funds. I get a certain amount of money a year to gives funds to the community to help with community projects and charity events. This then allows me to go to events such as the cherry blossom and the Special Olympics to represent the company.

Sarah: what is your favorite part about your job?

Marvel: I really love giving back to the community and being involved in promoting my hometown. It’s also fun attending all of the events that I get to attended to promote the company.

Sarah: What does an average day look like for you?

Marvel: No two days look alike; I do something different every day. There are a few that I do every day like answering emails and working with my team but everything else I do, I take day by day. I might be going to a lunch meeting on Monday and then on Tuesday going to visit an on location site to see where the Geico ad is going to be placed. One day I might be going to get shirts approves or going to an event to represent the company. That is what keeps my job interesting; I am always doing something different.

Sarah: Overall, what are your feelings on the career that you are in?

Marvel: It is a great career to be in. Like I said before, there is always something new happing every day which makes the job fun. At times, it can be a stressful job because there is always so much going on, but overall I love it.

Sarah: Thank you so much for your time!

Marvel: No problem and good luck!
