As an educator for 18 years, with 10 of those years spent in the classroom, I’ve accumulated countless memories that still bring a smile to my face. I can still vividly recall my middle school students from the early to mid-2010s, the laughter we shared, and the lessons we learned together. Being the yearbook coordinator, I had the privilege of capturing those moments through photos and videos, which now surface on my Timehop app, sending me on a nostalgic journey.

When “Yesterday” Becomes “Back in the Day”

It seems like just yesterday that we were playing the Scary Maze Game and Peter Answers together. But when I see my former students now, they’ve grown into adults with their own lives — some attending college, others pursuing careers or starting families. It’s a stark reminder that time has flown by, and the “like it was yesterday” moments for me have become their “back in the day.”

The “This Is Us” Connection: Multiple Timelines and Memories

As a fan of the TV show “This Is Us,” I can’t help but draw parallels between the multiple timelines depicted in the series and the memories we create throughout our lives. Just like how the show weaves together past, present, and future, our own lives are a tapestry of memories that shape who we are and how we perceive the world around us. This concept is a powerful reminder of the importance of cherishing every moment and making meaningful memories.

Creating “Back in the Day” Memories for the Next Generation

My baby daughter still has a long way to go before she reaches middle school, but I can’t help but think about the memories we’re creating now and the ones yet to come. Every moment, even those several years in the future, will be her “back in the day.” This realization both blows my mind and inspires me to make every moment count. As a parent and an educator, I want to give her the best “back in the day” possible.

The Power of Memories in Shaping Our Lives

These reflections on the passage of time and the memories that we create serve as a reminder that our roles as educators and parents are not just about imparting knowledge or ensuring academic success. We’re also responsible for shaping the memories that our children and students will carry with them for the rest of their lives. It’s in those “back in the day” moments that they’ll find inspiration, motivation, and a sense of identity.

Cherish the Moments and Build Lasting Memories

So, let’s cherish the time we have with our children and students, embrace the journey, and strive to create meaningful memories. After all, the “back in the day” moments that we help create today will shape the people they become tomorrow.

What are some of your favorite “back in the day” moments as an educator or a parent? I’d love to hear your stories, so feel free to share them in the comments below!
