Have you ever noticed how seemingly unrelated aspects of life can teach us valuable lessons? The stock market has a surprising number of parallels with our everyday experiences. On this day in 2020, I shared a Facebook post highlighting one such connection between the stock market and life in general. It showed up on my Timehop, and I thought it was still relevant. Now, I’m turning that post into a full-length blog. Let’s dive in!

Disruptions: Short-term Gains and Long-term Potential

In the stock market, disruptions such as earnings reports, FDA approvals, positive press, and circumstantial relevance can lead to short-term gains. However, these spikes are usually followed by a reversion back to the average. While it may seem that long-term growth comes in leaps, it’s actually more gradual. Disruptions, though, can act as catalysts to spark long-term growth.

📈 Application to Real Life: Embracing Change

The year 2020 brought a significant disruption in the form of remote learning due to the global pandemic. The topic of the Facebook post was as follows: As life slowly returns to “normal,” the tendency may be to revert back to our pre-pandemic routines, and we might even experience some backsliding as we readjust. That’s entirely natural. However, it’s crucial to fight to hold onto our collective gains and continue to build on what we’ve learned during this challenging period.

📉 Case Study: APRN’s Performance in 2020

To illustrate this point, let’s look at the performance of APRN (Blue Apron Holdings Inc.) in 2020. As people adjusted to remote work and home-based activities, APRN experienced a surge in demand for their meal kit delivery service. This led to a temporary spike in their stock price. However, as the world began to reopen, the stock price started to decline. The key takeaway is that while disruptions can provide short-term benefits, it’s essential to work on long-term growth and maintain the positive changes we’ve made.

Strategies for Long-term Growth

To ensure we build upon the progress we’ve made during disruptive periods, consider the following strategies:

Reflect on Lessons Learned

💡 Take the time to evaluate what worked well during disruptions and identify areas where improvements can be made. Embrace the opportunity to grow and adapt.

Set Realistic Goals

🎯 Establish achievable, long-term objectives that align with the lessons learned from disruptions. Break down these goals into smaller, manageable steps to maintain momentum.

Maintain Accountability

🤝🏽 Share your goals with friends, family, or colleagues who can help hold you accountable. Regular check-ins and open communication can foster long-term success.

Stay Adaptable and Resilient

🌳 Recognize that change is inevitable and that disruptions will continue to occur. Cultivate adaptability and resilience to navigate these challenges and maintain long-term growth.

Conclusion

The stock market offers valuable life lessons about many things, including embracing disruptions and focusing on long-term growth. By applying these principles to our daily lives, we can make the most of challenging situations and emerge stronger than before.

(A note from 2023 Sarah: I’m sure this won’t be my last post about lessons from the stock market. There are so many old posts in my Timehop memories that I will uncover at some point!

Also, it’s not too late to build on the gains many districts made during lockdown, regarding building capacity and transformational opportunities.)
