A bit too fast

Running Diaries: 08/12/2021

Starting out a new season after running a 21K on November 28. The goal was to run it under 2 hours, however, I was not able to do this. I completed the run in 2 hours and 6 minutes. Good news — I get another crack at it.

Today’s Goal:

The idea was to run at least 10k today and run by observing the form. I wouldn’t need to worry about the time and the pace. My main concern would be to look at my form. “The floor is lava” — would be my mantra and that meant being nimble on my foot. Also, the idea was to drive the runs with my arms. But planning is something, execution is whole another beast.

How did the run feel?

I started out fast. In the first kilometre, I have a steep incline to tackle, and I think I ran it a bit too fast. The second and third kilometres were faster than the first. By the time I was midway through my fourth, I knew I was cooked. I mean — I could run slow and get to the 5K, but there was no way I was running 10k, not today. In hindsight, I might have run a slow 10k, but mentally the 5k was going to be energy-sapping, and therefore, I made up my mind to get to 5k.

Overall pace:

The overall pace of the run was decent and I am happy with it. For a 5K run, I am satisfied with the pace — apart from the last kilometre. The average pace for the run was 5:44/Km- the last km a bit over 6.

The ideal pace I think for a 5k run for me at this moment would be around 5:45- 6:00 /km. I also feel I can maintain this pace for a 10k run. And this is what I am looking to do. Trying to get the feel of what a run in the 5:45–6:00 range looks like and then trying to maintain that consistent pace.

Before I sat down to write today, I thought I was a bit disappointed today given I had initially planned to run a 10k but ended up running only 5. Now though, I feel satisfied to have gotten some run at all after a mini-drought of a week.

There were times when I only pondered. Then the thoughts became vocal and I started talking out loud When even that became insufficient, I turned to writing
