SATRE 1.0.0 Release

The first official version of a Standardised Architecture for Trusted Research Environments (SATRE) has been released, and aims to improve the design, security and maintenance of TREs across the UK.

This first version of SATRE is the culmination of over eight months of work from people and institutions across the UK, many of whom volunteered their time and expertise to help the SATRE consortium create this architecture.

Trusted research environment (TREs) are secure computing environments that allow researchers to work with sensitive data, such as patient records or government data, without compromising the security of that data.

SATRE is a set of high-level principles that govern the design and operation of TREs at both the technical and governance levels, along with detailed guidance on how to implement those principles. It is relevant to organisations that are planning to build a TRE, or that are already operating one. This specification will allow TREs to learn best practice from each other and avoid redesigning everything from scratch.

SATRE is just the first step in achieving the bigger goal of improving how secure research is done in the UK. This architecture will allow TREs to be more easily compared and evaluated, for data providers to understand how their data is managed and used, and eventually to enable researchers to work more efficiently when conducting vital research without compromising the security of the data.

SATRE are now seeking TREs to evaluate themselves against the architecture, and to provide feedback on how it can be improved.

What you can do

We are looking for feedback and input from the wider community. Read SATRE here https://satre-specification.readthedocs.io/en/v1.0.0/ and be part of the next steps for SATRE.

  • If you are involved in running a TRE: Evaluate your TRE against SATRE using the provided spreadsheet, and join our evaluation workshop on Wednesday 25 October
  • If you are building a TRE: Consider if your planned TRE follows SATRE and how you can apply it
  • If you are a researcher, data provider, or member of the public: Find out more about the project via our other Medium posts and provide feedback.

Provide feedback by attending our final Collaboration Cafe on Thursday 19 October (register your interest for Collaboration Cafés here) You can further engage with the SATRE Project through various channels, such as the project’s Medium blog, mailing list, the SATRE Specification GitHub Repository and via email.
