The single biggest news story right now? President-Elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet Picks. Politics aside, there are a few things that everyone can learn about how to make sure your name is on the must call list when that “perfect” job comes open.

The Cabinet of the President of the United States is one of the most sought after positions in the public-sector universe and they definitely aren’t accepting resumes through a job board. SO, how did Mr. Trumps transition team put together their list? It’s a process that started months ago and one that can help you land your dream job too.

These appointments are the most important roles for our government and they don’t happen by accident. The relationship between the candidate pool and Mr. Trump’s team is a result of a long-term cycle that started months and sometimes years ago. Below are 3 things that you can be doing to make sure you are top of mind when your “dream” job comes open.

1. Have a Networking Strategy

This is considered a four-lettered word in some people’s vocabulary and at least a point of nervousness for most of us. Developing a strategy around the type of events you should attend and why can help make a big difference. Bob Jacobs recently wrote a book, Rack’em Up and Win that can help.

2. Are you building the right relationships?

Do you know “who” you should know?

How many one on one meetings are you doing a month strictly for your career?

If you lost your job, do you know who you would call first?

3. Know what the “Perfect” opportunity looks like

Do you know what the right next position is for your career? Some questions to be asking yourself are….

What is the right Culture for you?

Are you passionate about what the company does?

How important is company size, location, industry vertical?

What does the “total” compensation need to be?

How much travel is too much?

What kind of relationship do you want with your manager?

Your “Dream” job won’t come from a job board nor submitting your resume through some portal. That strategy may help you find a Just Over Broke JOB, but won’t help you advance your career. Jeffrey Gitomer has said “All things being equal, people do business with people they like. All things being unequal, people do business with people they like.” That only happens over time.
