Goal Commitment Agreement

We all have goals. Goals are our commitments to achieve something dearer to us. Can we have a goal commitment agreement so that we stay on track and put our best efforts to achieve them?

Let’s explore how having a goal commitment agreement helps.

How do we set goals?

In life, we set a lot of goals and hence make a lot of commitments, big and small.

We make commitments with ourselves, our family, with our colleagues and at work.

Some commitments are short-term and some are long-term. Some are personal, some are for business.

More often than not, we make these commitments mentally and verbally.

The extent of our commitment also varies based on our emotional state.

When we are emotionally charged up, we commit more. We don’t look at the practicality of achieving them.

And when we are not much emotional, we keep our commitments realistic.

Let’s see some simple examples.

If we need to develop the habit of walking daily, we say to ourselves that I will get up in the morning every day and walk.

It is a self-talk. If we need to fulfill any of our responsibility, we verbally say to ourselves that I will do it.

We do not keep any written documents for our personal commitments.

Why Goal commitment agreement?

Due to the absence of any written documents, the recall of commitments/goals is purely based on memory.

When anything is based on memory we tend to forget.

That is the reason why we fail to accomplish most of our goals.

If we look at how commitments are made and honored in businesses all over the world, they are made through contracts or agreements which are physical commitments, which are carefully worded and signed by both the parties.

In the case of written contracts/agreements, the terms of the agreement are well laid.

The expectations and the outcome of the agreement are well articulated so that there is no ambiguity.

The document also makes us take accountability for our commitments.

In case of failure to meet the commitments made in the agreement, the non-fulfillment is clearly visible and the parameters that made us fail also can be found out.

When it comes to the case of business agreements, we tend to write elaborate documentation and record the goals/objectives to be accomplished and the processes to be adopted.

But, when it comes to personal commitments and goals, we do not keep any written agreements or contracts.

Why this anomaly?

It is due to the fact that, most of the time, when we operate in uncertainty, we tend to resist taking up accountability.

In case of personal goals/commitments, though we may feel that the goal/commitment is important to us, we are not sure whether we will do all the needful to ensure that we reach our goal / keep our commitment without fail.

This tendency of us keeps us away from entering into firm commitments.

But, based on my strong sense, like in business, I believe that a written contract towards meeting our goals will be a good step to stay committed to our goals.

I am presenting a document which will work as a simple format for you to commit yourself to reach your goal.

Irrespective of what goal you are pursuing and whatever may be the commitment that you want to keep, this agreement can be used.

It will remind you often of your commitment to your goals.

It will also make you break down your goals to sub-milestones which you can track and measure the progress towards your goals.

The agreement highlight the rewards that you would want to have on achieving your goals.

You can download the agreement by clicking the link here:

Review the agreement. Use it for your goals.

I have already signed the agreement for two of my goals.

I will share, with you my journey and how useful this agreement was for me.
