2018 Save Texas History Symposium — Alamo Battlefield Tour & Pioneer Surveying of the Alamo
Registration for the ninth annual Save Texas History Symposium includes the opportunity for two interactive experiences at the Alamo. Afternoon sessions feature a guided tour of the Alamo battlefield, as well as a hands-on lesson in the methods of pioneer surveyors. Available from 1:00–2:30 and 3:00–4:30, these sessions offer Symposium guests an opportunity to stretch their legs and get an up-close look at the Alamo grounds.
Registration for this workshop is included for those who register for the symposium. Click here to register.
Alamo Battlefield Tour
The Alamo battlefield tour is guided by Alamo history interpreters. The private tour takes visitors through the area that was the original footprint of the Spanish mission complex (today Alamo Plaza), describing the events leading up to and including the Battle of the Alamo, and concluding within the Alamo Church. This tour is an excellent opportunity for Symposium attendees to reacquaint themselves with the Alamo grounds in the heart of San Antonio.
Pioneer Surveying of the Alamo
Curious how land was surveyed without the aid of modern technology like GPS or lasers? This hands-on lesson in nineteenth-century surveying is provided by surveyors from the GLO. It uses the tools of the time — vara chains, compasses, and transits — to explain the challenges facing pioneering Texas surveyors, and the methods they used to overcome them. Attendees have the opportunity to survey a piece of the Alamo, an exercise that will test their ability to follow in the steps of pioneer surveyors from Texas’ early days.
