Our team is focused on building the 3D map of the world: the platform on top of which all future industries, like Autonomous Vehicles, Robotics and Augmented Reality will sit. This includes anything from APIs and data visualization, to machine learning and high performance computing. We’d love for you to meet the people behind the team — next up, is our Senior Data Scientist(or as he prefers Senior Tachyonic Engineer), Arjang!

Hey Arjang! Introduce yourself in few words please.

Hello, I’m Arjang, I recently rode a yak near the Pakistan-China border in the Karakoram mountains.

What’s your background?

Applied maths, focusing on stochastic fluid transport models in the human gastrointestinal tract. That was the focus of my PhD from University of Michigan.

What attracted you to Scape?

The idea of building a large scale data processing pipeline from scratch, and being a machine learning engineer that can wear many hats.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

One of the biggest things I enjoy is working with very smart people every day.

What are you most excited for this year at Scape?

Big picture, I’d say that would be deploying the pointcloud in more and more cities.

More personally, and on a finer scale, working on a large-scale image retrieval problem.

What’s the most interesting challenge you’ve come across since you joined Scape?

Two things, to be honest. 1) How to optimize for high throughput read/write when dealing with multiple storage layers, and 2) Building a retrieval framework that departs from traditional landmark detections.

If you had to pick one thing — what’s the best thing about working Scape?

Same as above — working with very smart people on a daily basis.

What was your favourite social event that Scape has organised?

Playing darts.

Can you describe your team in 3 words?

Fast, faster, tachyonic.

Do you have a hidden talent?

I can make a water droplet sound that is very convincing. I also play a traditional Persian instrument that is from the lute family.

When you’re not at Scape, what kind of things are you into?

Football when I find good pickup games, gym, nerdy side projects, travelling and photography.
