3 From Hell: A Fitting End to the Firefly Trilogy

In honor of Sid Haig, the maniacal mastermind behind ‘Captain Spaulding’.

Forget what the so-called reviews say (as always, body horror and splatterpunk tend to get pandered and splattered by critics anyway). The fact is this: horror icons are resilient, even after a certain film peppered them with bullets, and normal logical human beings can assume that they’re, of course, dead.

The three-quel, following Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects and House of a 1,000 Corpses, sealing the deal for a complete trilogy of terror, managed to generate a massive $1.92MM — just from three features at Fathom Events. Count ‘em — three. That’s possibly on the same level as Avengers: Endgame and a healthy dose of dough, arguably the best Zombie has done with his films.

No doubt a lot of that is due to the buzz over the fact that Haig — the actor responsible for bringing the horror in Captain Spaulding, one of the most terrifying un-supernatural clowns to date — recently left us, sadly, to join the horror gods above (or below, whichever way you want to see it).

Characters speak the most as to the timelessness and fervor of a story meant to char the souls of viewers. Bad reviews, begone. Zombie’s a quintessential horror master, no doubt. And it shows.

Zombie’s last two films, 31 and Lords of Salem, collectively grossed only under $2MM — and that was on 538 different screens and 354 theaters total. Put it in perspective, though, and House of 1,000 Corpses hauling in just $12.63MM in 2003 and The Devil’s Rejects squeezing out $17.044MM in 2004 for their entire theatrical runs, and that $1.92MM for just three showings of the third and final pièce de résistance is quite the sendoff and bow-out of a titan trilogy of horror.

It was then recently announced that due to 3 From Hell’s remarkable pull, Zombie will send the film back into actual theater chains — totaling roughly 500 to 700 auditoriums — for the Halloween season in October of 2019.

Although the newest (and the following sequels, for sure) made more — and arguably may be even better (hurts to say that, honestly). In all fairness, that’s more love for another classic icon wearing a certain Shatner mask anyway. Yet Zombie’s versions still hold up in gritty format as what’s characteristic of Rob’s flavor, raking in $58.2MM and $33.4MM collectively back in 2007 and 2009.

Sid, of course, must be prouder of his macabre work on the definitive series that will forever remain as Zombie’s hallmark. Rest in piece, Spaulding. And keep cackling with the best of them!
