As a veteran high school English teacher of 16 years that included 4 years handling ‘discipline’ part time in the office, I often wondered…if the standard model of detentions, suspensions, and expulsions actually worked to make schools a saner, safer place. The number of students who serve detentions, or spend several school sanctioned days at home has risen over the past decade, but the schools are not safer and the students whose behavior warrants punishment form an ever larger social circle of dropouts and sadly, prisoners. ¶ We can refuse to tolerate these children in our schools by suspending them and ultimately expelling…
