The magic of our very first Bootcamp was the diversity of people who came onboard to change their lives and jump into the world of software development and all things tech. We took on a group of 19 people with a massive range of backgrounds, most of whom had never seen a line of code before Bootcamp Day 1. Now we are catching up with them 3 months after Demo Day to see how they are getting on, and what they think of their Bootcamp experience.

Welcome to the School of Code “Where are they now” series. Each week for the next few months, we will be releasing up-to-date interviews with the first cohort to find out what they’ve been up to since the end of the first ever School of Code Bootcamp. Now that the dust has settled from the first Bootcamp, dive in and find out what the world looks like right now for our first cohort.

Scott’s Story

Feeling that university wasn’t an option for him, 18-year-old Scott was looking for other avenues after leaving school. He had an interest in technology, and had some previous drag and drop web building experience, but had never tried coding. “I loved games, and had done some drag and drop game making but really wanted to learn how the code underneath worked,” Scott said. He stumbled across the School of Code Bootcamp and, intrigued by the world of tech and keen to start his journey, he decided to give it a shot and apply.

Scott was selected to join the 19-person cohort as its youngest member. For Scott, the Bootcamp offered a practical and intense challenge to kickstart a tech career: “In just 16 weeks, we covered more material than I ever imagined, and it is all cutting-edge tech with the latest techniques and best practices. By the time my friends graduate from their university courses, I will already have three years of being a professional software developer under my belt.”

“No doubt about it, it has changed my life,” Scott said. “It has instantly put me ahead of other developers my age who are currently still studying at university, whilst I am already learning on the job! I, and many others, have proven you need no experience whatsoever in coding to do this course. Plus, it’s fun!” he added.

Scott has recently started a job as a Junior Web Developer with startup company MedStars, where he hopes to continue to grow as a developer and eventually move into a more senior developer position.

Since the Bootcamp, Scott has kept in touch with fellow Bootcampers. “This Bootcamp has been a truly amazing experience and I have enjoyed every second of it,” Scott said.
