MAKEUP TUTORIAL: Botanical Beauty
by Mimi McMillan
The study of botany has long been highly gendered. Botany was one of the first sciences (men) deemed appropriate for women. Many female botanists made major discoveries, but they didn’t receive the recognition they earned. Often, their husbands claimed their credit or the work they did was not even considered “real science.” That is, until men took over as botany gained momentum around the middle of the 19th century.
For this tutorial, I used real flowers to decorate my face. I recommend collecting wildflowers in your neighborhood, if possible. It’s a great way to be more observant of the plant life around you and celebrate the female pioneers in this beautiful subject.
THE FLORAL TWIGGY

1. Gather small flower petals. I used 5 petals from a pink Daisy.
2. Apply a drop of clear eyelash glue to tip of each petal. Place the petal near, but not exactly on, your lower lash line.
3. Repeat this process until flower petals fill your lash line.
Haven’t you always wanted floral eyelash extensions?
LEAF BROWS

1. Gather about 6 small (I used ~2in long x 1/4in wide) leaves. This means about 3 for each eye.
2. Apply eyelash glue to cover the entire back of the first leaf. Place it on the inner part of your eyebrow, paying attention to match the shape.
3. Place another fully glued leaf on the remaining part of your brow.
4. Glue the remaining leaf/leaves, on top of the first two to create a more dimensional look.
