How Does Beard Oil Work?

There is no question a good beard oil can help soften and tame beard hair. But how? For those of you like me who have multidirectional facial hair growth and are considering it for yourself, the magic is real…well..science that is.

At a high level, there are two reasons why beard oil works.

  1. Beard oils Oxidize. In other words — beard oils do not evaporate. Oils actually absorb into and coat your hair. This coating causes added weight and softness. The lack of evaporation is also what allows the oil to work into your skin, providing hydration and conditioning to the pores. For the same reason you get a stinky mustache after drinking milk (the fatty oils from the milk stay on your beard….ew) beard oils will stay on your beard until washed out. Fortunately there isn’t milk in beard oil;)
  2. Facial hair is Androgenic. Androgenic hair is thirsty hair (weird I know) Androgenic hair, unlike head hair, draws very little oil from the skin. Because of the thick and wiry nature of androgenic hair, styling or directing your beard without added moisture is very difficult.

So what makes a good beard oil? The best beard oils are made from pure essential oils and cedarwood. Cederwood oil is a high quality scentless oil that does most of the work for your beard and face. The essential oils give it a nice scent. If you’re not into scents, pure cedarwood oil will actually work just fine!
