The Diffuser — How it Really Works

Sometimes I find myself just staring at our essential oil diffuser. What is this magical machine that creates smoke without boiling water? How can I touch this “steam” and not get burned? How do a few drops of oil mixed with water make our house smell amazing!?

The science behind diffuser’s is fascinating (in my nerdy opinion)!

There are actually a few different types of diffusers. The four most common diffusers are

  • Nebulizer Diffusers.
  • Ultrasonic/Humidifying Diffusers.
  • Heat Diffusers.
  • Evaporative Diffusers.

The most common type, and the type show in this picture is called an Ultrasonic diffuser. Here’s how it works

Ultrasonic Diffusers use vibration to agitate the water which releases negative ions into the air. These vibrations simultaneously break down the essential oil into micro molecules, releasing them into the air with the negative ions. As the oils break down they release natural ozone and, freshen and improve the quality of the air.

No boiling needed…just a lot of tiny vibrations! If your curious about how the other three types of diffusers work, check out this post.
