There are many health risks that can rise from sleep deprivation such as poor school performance, depressive symptoms, obesity, and cardiovascular problems. Getting less sleep can obviously affect a student’s focus at school. Obesity can arise from not getting enough sleep because when a student does not sleep enough they don’t have the energy to do any physical activity which then leads to the student gaining more weight. Athletic injuries from sleep loss can be caused by a student being not fit enough or in shape to participate in the sports that they used to be involved in. For example a student that is in a sport that requires a lot of running can pull a muscle from not being stretched enough or not having enough energy to complete a task. Getting less sleep can also increase the chance of a student having risk-taking behaviors. Many students that get less sleep can have depressive symptoms. This then leads to many students turning to alcohol or tobacco which reduces the feeling of depression. Another factor that can arise is stress. Stress is a huge problem for many teens and even though there are many other factors that cause it, losing sleep can make it ten times worse to deal with stress. Sleep loss is one aspect that changes a students life everyday and can influence how a teen performs in school or in life everyday. Students are expected to do so much these days and having little to no sleep can severely affect how they execute simple tasks.
