Plasmids, T-cells, mycorrhiza — no idea what these words mean? That’s alright, we don’t know either! But we will find out at the FameLab Semi-finals in Basel on 19 March 2020. On this day, scientists and engineers will be challenged to explain a scientific topic to a general audience in just three minutes. Are you passionate about science? Then come and join the FameLab competition. You could become the new face of science and represent Switzerland at the international final in the UK.

The FameLab is one of the biggest science communication competitions in the world and is supported by the British Council. During the semi-final in Basel, contestants get the chance to win over the jury and lay audience with a scientific talk that will be evaluated by three criteria: Content, Clarity, and Charisma. In other words, participants will have to be accurate, but also fun and understandable. Contrary to most other science slam competitions, participants are not allowed to use slides but instead are only equipped with their wits and a few props.

This is the fifth edition of FameLab in Basel. The winner of the semi-final will proceed to the national final in Bern and will have the privilege to get trained by a renowned science communicator during a whole weekend of Masterclass at CERN. The grand price: participating at the FameLab International final at the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK.
