Woman Possessed

A poem

The darkness within stirs awake,
clawing up her throat,
scrawling arcane symbols across her teeth
no gentle sleep, this.

It snakes through marrow and veins, spine,
to nestle deep in her nerve and tissue.
Her body — just on loan — now invaded, occupied.
It shrieks through her voice, beyond control,
makes her head turn, limbs jerk and contort.

Moves her like a puppet,
each motion choreographed.
The cross she clings to starts to smoulder
as this force seizes the wheel.
Profane words she’s forced to mutter,
rupturing her mind,
from the possessed soul within.

This parasite welcomed in,
masked in sheep’s clothes,
into her despair.
But it grew ravenous, powers awakened,
to consume her last shreds of light.

The book and water, useless,
no match for its clutches.
Its ancient shadow holds her hostage,
a sinister deal sealed.

She’s a prisoner in her stolen form,
only able to watch as it takes over,
possessed utterly, no longer her own,
by the ancient evil freed.
