Focus On The Blessings We Have
Gratitude Leads To Patience
“If you reach the morning and you have good health, food for the day, and safety, it’s a if you have the whole world and everything in it.”-Muhammad the son of Abdullah
During this Instagram and Tiktok age, we view perfectly crafted snippets of other people’s lives, which can make us believe that our lives are not filled with numerous blessings.
The above tradition elucidates that some things are more valuable than fame, fortune, and expensive trinkets.
Without good health, food and water, and safety in our lives, we are unable to seek the other blessings that can make our lives better. Many people don’t have the things mentioned, and they would trade places with us in a heartbeat.
However, many of us begin to overlook small blessings because they consistently exist in our lives. Just imagine if one or all of the bounties mentioned above were removed from our lives.
In many cases, we’re focused on what we don’t have instead of what we do have. This next tradition I’m going to quote changed my perspective on life. It allowed me to see how blessed I really am.
“Focus on the people who have less than you. Not on the people who have more than you because if you focus on the people who have more than you, you won’t appreciate the blessings God has given you”-Muhammad the son of Abdullah
This tradition is profound in text, but even more profound in practice. In light of this, I would like for you to do a little exercise. I want you to just look at your home and your body. If you’re reading this, that means you can see. Can you walk, talk, and hear?
What about your home? Do you have food in the cabinets and refrigerator? Do you have clean water to drink and shower with? Are you safe in your home? Do you have heat, cooling, and electricity?
Do you see where I’m going with this? There are people in America and all over the world who don’t have these basic necessities that we take for granted on a daily basis. Being grateful for what we have doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive for more.
It means that we are not overlooking the good that God has already placed in our lives. Striving to improve our condition is part of our natural inclination as human beings. It’s just as the poet says,
“A man’s feet are planted firmly on the ground, but indeed, his highest goals are in the stars.”
There’s no contradiction between being grateful and wanting more. The problem comes in when we fail to recognize all of the bounties we already have while striving to gain more. Let’s be grateful and generous because surely, God gives us much to be grateful for.
