Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that is naturally found in fruits, vegetables, and berries. This sugar alcohol has been shown to be beneficial when it comes to dental caries prevention (tooth decay that may lead to cavities). How?

Certain bacteria present in the mouth (specifically, these mutans streptococci are present in the plaque on your teeth and in your saliva), like mutans streptococci, have their specific energy processes that makes them survive. Xylitol interrupts these specific energy processes of the bacteria causing the cavity causing bacteria to die. Therefore, xylitol reduces cavity causing bacteria in the mouth (Nayak et al., 2014). Xylitol also has been shown to reduce the amount of acid certain bacteria produce. Acid production by certain microorganisms in the mouth is not good because increased acidity on the teeth can also lead to tooth decay and cavities. Consuming xylitol actually decreases the amount of plaque on the teeth.

Saliva is actually good for oral health because saliva has antibodies. So, this means that increased salivary flow in the mouth would help…
