Who doesn’t want to lose body fat? Unless you are one of those three percent body fat competitive bodybuilders.

I bet you have heard a lot of people say they are on keto or on a low carb diet in order to lose fat quick. The question is why are these low carb or keto diets so popular when it comes to losing fat? Of course, it is widely known that normal caloric deficit diets make you lose weight over time, but what about if you do caloric deficit with a low carbohydrate diet? Well lets get into the basic science of metabolism relating to eating a low carbohydrate diet.

Insulin is the primary anabolic hormone. It tells the body to store fat, to let amino acids and nutrients into your muscles cells so you can build more muscle tissue, and to store glycogen. This is why it is commonly known that if you are eating food, you are not burning fat. Why? Usually, the food you eat has carbohydrates. Carbohydrates tell the pancreas to release insulin so that the blood sugar can go back down to normal levels. When insulin is in the picture, you are not burning fat, but storing fat.
