Culture | Role | Money | People

After spending close to a decade in the same company, you suddenly realize and start thinking — Should I change my company? I am becoming a fossil here? I am too risk averse to even explore new opportunities outside?

Well, the answer depends on your current personal situation, personal priorities, your plans, most importantly what your current company offers?

Most common reasons what makes people change jobs could be— boring role, troubling manager or team, poorly paid, bad culture, non promising leadership, stagnant career…

But there are many good reasons why people park job changes, say..

  1. If you have a serious hobby or passion that you want to pursue in long term, then work towards it in parallel to existing job. When you are ready to move to the field of your choice and are confident can make money through that, you quit!
  2. If your company’s culture is good and leadership is something you look up to, then don't change instead move to a different role with the same job stream for some diverse experience and change job when you are ready for the niche and meaty role.
  3. If you think you have an issue with your manager, then have a conversation with your Manager and fill the gaps. If things don’t work and you love your role, change your Manager, not job.
  4. If you think your team members not adding value to your team’s performance, change their role and move them to another role where they fit best. Don’t sack them, don’t underestimate their potential and don’t jeopardize their aspirations.
  5. If you feel stuck in your career, lateral movement should also be considered. Vertical or upwards movements come with their own expectations and challenges. See if you are ready, then as ask for promotion.
  6. If you are in middle management role and movement to new company will end up in a lower level or lower leadership capacity, its a bad idea to change. Trust me no amount of money can help compensate for the status one enjoy in your current role.

New Job — new Company is best when -

  • It adds value to your personal learning and growth.
  • It helps you learn skills and gives exposure required to work or pursue your passion.
  • Gives you the increment salary required for your personal requirement.
  • Is your long awaited role or job.
  • Gives you the right blend of work — life balance, if that's what your previous job lacked
  • Gives your flexi or part time working, which you wanted for your well being
  • Gives you the benefits and perks that matters to you at this point.

Invest your time wisely. Changing job frequently can be mentally taxing more than the feeling on moving on..!!
