Thanks to a generous grant from the National Association of Science Writers Idea Grants program, we’re expanding our operations.

That means we’ll be redesigning our site and adding behind-the-scenes content about the writing and reporting of featured pieces.

It also means that we’re seeking new volunteers to join our team. (Under the terms of our current grant, we are only able to offer monetary compensation to the Grant-Writing and Design & Web Infrastructure team members at this time, but we hope to change that in the not-too-distant future.)

Open positions include:

GRANT-WRITING (monetary compensation available)

  • Identify + research funding opportunities
  • Assist in preparing grant applications
  • Maintain spreadsheet with info on the status of our grant applications
  • Participate in Google Hangout meetings discussing our grant application strategy

NOMINATION SCOUT (volunteer only)

  • Read the Internet + identify intriguing stories for SciShortform editors to consider for the round-up
  • Ensure that the pool of SciShortform-nominated stories is diverse (in terms of author backgrounds, sources quoted, & audience)
  • Make posts on social media groups + listservs encouraging readers and authors to nominate stories
  • Reach out to regional writing groups, asking for help spreading the word about the Best Shortform Science Writing Project and asking for nominations

READER/EDITOR (volunteer only)

  • Read & give opinions on stories nominated for the round-ups.
  • Flexible time-commitment. (Judging occurs in two rounds over a Google spreadsheet. Editors are free to participate in either or both rounds.)
  • Participate in Google Hangout meetings discussing which pieces to include in the round-ups. (Optional but strongly encouraged)

If you are interested in any of these roles, please contact Diana at diana@dianacrowscience.com. In your email, please specify which role(s) you are most interested in and describe any relevant qualifications or experience.

We welcome any of your ideas about improving our reach.

Nominations for the April-June round-up are now closed, but stories can be nominated for July-September through this Google form.
