Welcome to sclable’s “Meet the Techie: A Day in the Life” series, during which we’re sharing (believe it or not) a day in the life of some of the members on the development and tech team. This week, meet Veit Poigner, sclable’s viking-bearded Software QA Manager.

Sclable Software QA Manager Veit Poigner has always been into “technical stuff”. Especially taking it apart. As he says, “Building technical things is interesting, but for me, it’s breaking them down that is fun! I guess because I can figure out how everything works.”

It’s this mindset that allowed Veit to reverse-engineer his way back to software after getting his career started in customer service at a bank. “Even though I graduated with a degree in computer science, I thought at the bank I could really help people, so I ended up working with business clients. In doing so, I found I enjoyed solving their technical problems to figure out why things weren’t working for them. It brought me back to software.”

This open-minded and exploratory approach is also reflected in how Veit structures his workdays. Taking advantage of sclable’s flexible hours and remote working, he works when he wants and where he wants.

7AM

Veit works independently, so when he wakes up and starts, work is largely dictated by whether he has a meeting or an alignment with one of the project teams. It’s also determined by the time of year: “If I sleep in, I sleep in. If I wake up early, I wake up early. I just go with the flow of how I’m feeling. For example, during summer when the sun is out, I wake up early, have a good breakfast and coffee, then start my day. Winter is the other way around.”

This approach also applies to where Veit chooses to work. He likes to ride his bike, so when the weather is good, he’ll make an effort to ride in. “I do sort of sprints of home office,” he says. “I’ll work from home for two weeks and then when I feel like I need a change of scenery, I’ll go into the studio. Then two weeks later, I’ll work from home again.”

10AM

If he has an early start, Veit might work until 10AM, take some time to himself and then pick things back up from 1PM. Other times, he’ll work straight through the day, depending on the project.

1PM

What remains consistent for Veit, is the diversity of his projects. While there is one project that has been active since he started with sclable about two years ago, there are lots of smaller projects to jump in on, too. The diversity makes him better at his job. Veit explains: “Right now I have a project in banking, another for freighters, so I get a good overview of what’s happening out there. I also get to know the domains a lot faster, because I know which questions I should ask to understand what is going on in a project and the business problems our software is trying to solve.”

Throughout the day, Veit grinds away at testing these domains — from software that’s still in dev phase to solutions that are already live. Manual testing includes clicking through domains in all the browsers to ensure the functionality promised is delivered. His tech stack leans heavily on TypeScript and Playwright, which he uses to also automate browsers to do testing.

End of the day

Though Veit’s work is independent and based on maintaining an objective mindset, he’s a social guy. If his friends outside of work are meeting up in the late afternoon, Veit will sign out of work to hang out with them and will pick up where he left off when he returns home — even if it’s later in the evening. If he’s at the studio, he’ll happily strike up a conversation with whoever’s around. It’s not difficult, because according to Veit, sclable’s culture really allows you to be yourself. “I don’t know what the special sauce for recruitment is, but everyone at sclable is really friendly. It’s just nice to meet them all.”

Thanks for letting us meet you, Veit!
