Landon and I tend to endorse the idea that “no news is good news,” but it’s sadly not applicable in this case: The slow start to the 2016 spec market we last reported in April has continued through September.

This year’s sales numbers (through September 30) remain at an 8 year low, and we’re on track to end the year in the 60 to 70 range, which is in line with 2009’s and 2010’s weak totals.

Thankfully, buying activity outside the major studios and their labels has been on par with last year (led by Amazon Studios, FilmNation, Netflix, and STX). The real problem is the major studios’ reticence to buy original material (check out the table on page 9 of the Scorecard).

Unless your last name is Boxerbaum or Karp, there aren’t many silver linings in the numbers, but it’s worth remembering how cyclical the business is. Not to mention one of our other favorite phrases: “This, too, shall pass.”
