GSoC’21: The onboarding phase

Google Summer of Code(GSoC) is an initiative by Google to bridge the gap between student developers and open-source organizations to further the growth of the open-source community. This summer, I will work with the SCoRe Lab team on their Scan8 project under GSoC’21.

Why SCoRe Lab

After days of going through different organizations participating in GSoC this summer, I found SCoRe Lab to be the right fit for me. The way SCoRe Lab delivers low-cost, sustainable solutions to intriguing problems inspires me in a way I can’t put into words.
I always wanted to delve into the field of SecDevOps(Secure Development Operations), and the Scan8 initiative by SCoRe Lab was just what I was looking for.

The Scan8 project

Cybersecurity is an essential aspect of today’s era. It gives me immense pleasure to be a part of a fantastic team willing to contribute to this cause.
Scan8 is a distributed scanning system for detecting trojans, viruses, malware, and other malicious threats embedded in URLs or files. The system will allow one to submit a list of URLs or files and get the scan results in return.
Scan8 will use the ClamAV open-source antivirus project as the scan engine and Google gVisor as the sandbox container, managed by Kubernetes.
The system will create many ClamAV containers and distribute the scan list on demand amongst them.

Community Bonding Period

The community bonding period started with the announcement of selected GSoC proposals on May 17 and will (formally) extend up to June 7.
The ScoRe Lab community extended a warm welcome to all the new members which were then followed by an enriching onboarding experience. Being in constant touch with my mentors during this onboarding period has helped me learn more about the project and the community itself.
Over the next couple of weeks, I will be deliberating over the technical and structural aspects of the project with my mentors and my fellow GSoCers.

It has been an exhilarating experience for me, right from submitting a proposal for GSoC to becoming a part of a fantastic community.
