Different Country, Same Passion @Scout24: Meet Nandhinee Gumma

Nandhinee works as a Junior Data Scientist in the Data Science team and is originally from India. We talked to her about cultural differences between India and Germany, her biggest challenges and her work at the company.

Nandhinee: I am originally from India. I had the opportunity to grow up in different parts of south India. This meant I learned new languages, explored different cities, and got introduced to various regional cuisines.

I moved to Germany for my master’s in late 2019 and started working at Scout24 as a working student data analyst in 2020. After graduation, I was offered an opportunity as a Junior Data Scientist in the Data Science team.

2. What is the biggest cultural difference between your home country and Germany?

Nandhinee: I appreciate the straightforward attitude in Germany with no sugar-coating of speech. Also, in India, it is common to socialize more in workplaces whereas here, work and personal life are compartmentalized.

3. What has been the biggest challenge moving to and working in a new country such as Germany (If you found your home on ImmoScout24, you are welcome to elaborate on this as well.)?

Nandhinee: Coming from a tropical country, coping with cold winters has been challenging. Dressing for cold weather can be tricky as it usually turns out to be colder or warmer than it looks. I am yet to master the art of layering for the unpredictable weather in Germany. Besides that, navigating through bureaucracy especially with limited knowledge of German, has made it particularly difficult.

Like the most of us in Berlin, I had trouble finding good accommodation, leading me to move 5 times in 3 years and still searching for a place that meets all my needs.

4. How does your individual background influence your work at Scout24/with your team?

Nandhinee: My diverse work and education experience brings a lot of passion and diversity of thought to the team and in turn reflects on Scout24 for being such an amazing place to work due to everyone’s unique backgrounds.

5. How many languages do you speak? (You can, for example, talk about which one is your primary language at home / at work / talking to friends/family from your home country?)

Nandhinee: I am a polyglot and can speak 6 languages — English, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malyalam and Hindi. Thus, my language of conversation depends on what language the group I’m at the time is most comfortable with. Needless to say, I’m working hard to add German to my list of languages.

6. Comparing Scout24 to other employers you had in the past, what distinguishes Scout24 from them?

Nandhinee: I love how diversity and inclusion are emphasized at Scout24. With such an inclusive workplace experience, everyone can contribute to their maximum potential. The underlying culture which values and cares for all Scouts is rare to find.

7. What’s the best thing about living in Berlin?

Nandhinee: As a vegetarian, I was a bit skeptical when I moved to Germany regarding available food options. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan options in Berlin. I love the food scene in Berlin. Berlin is such a well-connected city with a good public transport system. I was able to explore and enjoy the city much easier as I could get around it without any hassle or having to own a car. I love how green the city is with so many parks not only in the suburbs but also in the central parts.
