Charging Up Communities With Clean Technology

Globalization is rapidly advancing technology and providing worldwide connectivity. Unfortunately, there are still an estimated of 1.3 billion people living without access to electricity in underdeveloped nations. The alternative, kerosene lighting, is expensive and dangerous, causing burns, respiratory problems, and even death. However, many renewable energy businesses have difficulty serving these people because the majority lack financial services that would allow them to make a payment plan. “Pay as you go” solutions are often restricted based on available technologies, existing businesses and investment risks. How can society extend the benefits of electricity to these underdeveloped nations?

Created in 2012, Lumeter has developed practices and software to make it possible for renewable energy providers to offer electricity in some of the poorest areas of the world. They have developed a unique Charge Ahead platform, which includes a pre-paid off grid meter and accounting software that can be integrated with any developer or vendor of electrical equipment. And nowadays they offer different solutions for manufacturers and distributors like:

  • Solar Home Systems
  • Mini-grids
  • Solar Pumps
  • Agricultural Technologies

So far, this approach to provide electricity in impoverished regions has proven successful. As co-founder Mitra Ardon explained, “success will come from empowering local entrepreneurs, who already understand their own communities, with technology that allows them to offer payment solutions.”

Most recently, Lumeter played a key role in helping more than 30 Haitian families get electricity into their homes. The company Limye pa W creates energy from biomasses like corn from farmers using biomass gasifiers. Lumeter’s meters were used to allocate the energy from the gasifers and deliver it to people’s homes. It was the first time some of them had ever received electricity. Lumeter has also recently partnered with Fosera, a solar home system company. Together, they have developed the first complementary solar home system that is incorporated with Lumeter’s Charge Ahead platform. Lumeter’s diverse technologies and systematic pre-paid model are continuously changing lives and charging up communities all over the world.
