“Set up a way to make learning reflection an integral part of the process, and reserve time for it at the end of each session. Teach kids to express what they learned this session, particularly recording (and celebrating!) their mistakes, and what they learned from those mistakes. I also like them to record ideas for what else they could do in future with what they’ve just learned. Keep all a student’s reflections together as a record of their journey. Periodically give them time to review their reflections, looking to see their own progress and rediscover ideas they’d forgotten.
