Around the World with #FlatScratchCat

This year, Scratch turns 10!

During May, there were more than 1100 Scratch Day events around the world to celebrate Scratch’s birthday — setting a record and making for a particularly special birthday gift. From Alberta, Canada, to Victoria, Australia, the Scratch community gathered in person to meet, share, and learn from each other. There were Scratch cakes and cookies, noisemakers, and plenty of orange balloons.

Although May is Scratch’s birthday month, you can celebrate Scratch Day any day! To host or attend a Scratch Day event in your community, visit day.scratch.mit.edu.

To keep the festivities going all year, we’re also inviting the global Scratch community to bring Scratch Cat around the world.

Flat Scratch Cat is the creation of Henry and Will Davies, brothers and Scratchers, who were inspired by the Flat Stanley Project, a literacy and community building project designed to connect kids from around the world. Henry and Will remixed the original idea by subbing in Scratch Cat for Stanley, and inviting fellow Scratchers to take a photo of Scratch Cat in places or with people who are meaningful to them.

As we continue to celebrate a decade of Scratch, we hope you’ll join us by decorating your own Flat Scratch Cat, snapping a photo, and sharing it on social media.

To get started, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Flat Scratch Cat image, then right-click to save it as a local file, print it out, and cut along the dotted lines.
  2. Decorate your Scratch Cat however you’d like: add color, flair from your country or hometown, or other creative elements.
  3. Take a photo of your cat in places that and/or with people who are meaningful to you.
  4. Post your photo on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter with the hashtag #FlatScratchCat

Where will you take your #FlatScratchCat?
