This post is part of our Unlock the Block series, where Scratch Team members help you unlock the magic behind some of their favorite blocks in the Scratch editor. This series will also showcase some pretty impressive projects from our inventive Scratchers. By the end of this series, we hope to inspire you to create more of the things you want to see in the world.

It’s springtime here at the Scratch headquarters, and the flowers are blooming in our virtual gardens. In this Unlock the Block post, we will teach you how to use the Stamp block to create your own garden and much more. Let’s dig in!

What is the Stamp block?

The Stamp block is a Pen block that you can access through the extensions menu just beneath the code panel. When used in a script, the Stamp block will allow you to produce a duplicate image of the sprite and stamp it onto any location on the stage.

Stamp blocks differ from the Clone blocks we recently covered because they only copy the sprite’s image to the background, so they cannot be programmed.

Unlocking the block

  1. Open a new project and click on the add extensions button underneath the code panel
  2. Click on the pen extension to add the stamp and other pen blocks to your coding panel
  3. Select a flower, vegetable, or any other sprite to begin planting your garden
  4. Select the stamp block to create a duplicate of the selected sprite
  5. Use event, control, sound blocks, and others to write your script and expand your garden
