Founded in 2013 as the Code-to-Learn Foundation, we fund and promote approaches to coding that engage young people in thinking creatively, reasoning systematically, and working collaboratively. To reflect our specific focus on Scratch, we’re changing our name to the Scratch Foundation. Scratch is the block-based programming language and online community developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab.

Over the past year, we’ve talked to advisors, developed plans, and presented our ideas to prospective funders. Through these conversations and activities, it’s become clear that Scratch, and its dynamic ecosystem of interacting projects (Scratch, ScratchJr, ScratchEd) and events (Scratch Day, Scratch Conference, Scratch Educator Meetups), is where we can make the biggest impact.

We’re off to a great start, with a successful inaugural fundraiser in New York, a growing number of partners, and an emerging media presence online.

Our plans for the future include:

  • Develop and disseminate materials that help young people engage in creative learning activities using Scratch and ScratchJr.
  • Coordinate online communities and in-person events that support young people and educators using Scratch.
  • Provide funding to make Scratch and ScratchJr available on more platforms, with more features, and for broader audiences.

The Scratch Foundation raises funds from individuals, corporations, and foundations to support the entire Scratch ecosystem and ensure that Scratch remains free, for everyone. If you’d like to support our work, please click here for more information.
