Firefly In a Mason Jar

We are all fireflies
smashing against a tightly screwed on lid
our little light shining back off the glass
trapped in the mason jar

The moon promises light
in whispers of moon beams
parting shaded tree branches
to find the mason jar

Tired wings keep pushing against the limits of our lids
the hum-song of firefly wings
trapped in a mason jar
we push back, our lights growing dimmer

We sing sad songs in the lunar whispers
of a dimming faded yellow light
pale bone white moon light fingers tap the glass
little firefly circling the glass in a swirl

We are a quieting song of wing flaps growing weak
exhaustion mingles with the excitement of the prize
we push back, defiance of a dimming light
we are not their damned prize

Dim yellow mingles with moonlight
a promise against the darkening night
