True Crime is a very popular podcast genre and given the influx of content in this format, at times it becomes hard to pick and choose.

Here are five recent favourite true crime podcasts that you need to add to your list.

Wrongful Convictions: False Confessions
The podcast is hosted by Jason Flom, the renowned music executive, children’s book author and philanthropist. He is also the co-producer along with Jeff Kempler, Lava Media COO.
Each episode shares the story of a wrongfully convicted individual, told by the exoneries and the team of lawyers that helped saved their lives.

These stories highlight the flaws of the justice system and how people in authority can ruin a life for a spectrum of reasons from racism to plain laziness or stupidity.

While the real life incidents are quite bleak, the hope and optimism comes from the survivors and their ability to forgive, move on and give back to society in a positive manner.

Blood Ties
This is a weekly true crime podcast, hosted by the father — daughter duo, Geoffrey and Molly Wansell.

It aims to unearth the truth behind some of the most horrific crimes around the globe, as the duo unpacks the myths that surrounds some of these key cases.

In a world where we binge any form of content, this podcast will keep you hooked, thanks to combination of Geoffrey’s expertise and Molly’s inquisitive nature. As the podcast’s official bio says, ‘A Wansell family brunch is never deathly dull.’

My Favourite Murder
This is a one of its kind podcast for this genre. As far as I know this is the only true crime series that is quite funny as well.

Hosted by comedians Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark and tell their favourite murder tales and invite friends and fans to hear their hometown crime stories. The series started in 2016 and in addition of the main series, there are multiple minisodes and specials inbetween.

The show has a hardcore fan base that can challenge any beloved TV series and have titled themselves, Murderinos.

Bad People
Co-hosted by Dr Julia Shaw, a criminal psychologist and Sofie Hagen, a comedian by profession and self-confessed fan of the genre of true crime.

Bad People dissect the criminal cases that shock, intrigue and scare us the most.’

In addition to exploring a new case in every episode, there is a scientific twist, as the show takes a closer look at the science and analysis behind the crimes, to avoid sensationalising the crimes.

Small Town Big Crimes
A project by the Charlottesville based journalist Courteney Stuart, Rachel Ryan and Jaclyn Piermarini, this podcast doubles as a local media organization focused on true crime and criminal justice issues.

The current episodes are the first release titled, Small Town Big Crime: Jens Soering and the Haysom Murders. This is still an ongoing case which has been on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic, so you have time to catch up on all the episodes before the latest one comes in.

Here is a brief of the case:
‘In 1985, Derek and Nancy Haysom were brutally stabbed to death in their home in Bedford County. When investigators zeroed in on their daughter, Elizabeth Haysom, and her boyfriend, Jens Soering, the two University of Virginia students fled the country. They were arrested months later in London, and Soering initially confessed to the crime but soon recanted, insisting he had only done so to protect Elizabeth. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, but years later, new evidence emerged to support his claim of innocence. So who really killed Derek and Nancy Haysom and why?’
