Pakistan’s contemporary instrumental fusion/funk band, Mughal-e-Funk released their latest single, Sakal Ban yesterday via Rearts Records. It is a groovy electronic funk song. Originally written by Amir Khusrau, it features the vocal powerhouse, Meesha Shafi.

Talking exclusively to Mashable Pakistan the band shared, “We wanted something different, introduce a new sound, where we can experiment and explore new dimensions of Indian classical music mixing up with western tones, rhythms and melodies and hence, particularly for this song we collectively decided to reach out to Meesha because we knew only she can bring this song to life and the way we wanted to interpret it”.

Earlier this year, the group also released an animated music video of their single ‘Akbar’ from their EP ‘Sultanat’.

Furthermore, the band confirmed to Mashable Pakistan that they are currently working on releasing their first full length studio album, which will be featuring many musicians from across Pakistan and will be a completely new and diverse experience musically. Their debut album is set for release early 2021.

The band comprising of four seasoned musicians, the line-up includes Kami Paul on the drums, Rufus Shahzad on synths and keyboards, Rakae Jamil on sitar with Farhan Ali on the bass. The band’s compositions are known for being musical interpretations of the lives and cultural contributions of the Mughal Empire in the realms of art, music, poetry and literature. The Mughals left a great impact on sub-continent’s history and culture. To date it lives on through the much celebrated architecture. The band’s name is also inspired by the Mughal Era and the tracks are named after the various emperors of that time.

Mughal-E-Funk’s new sound brings about a range of diverse musical textures, versatility, and more sitar laden harmonies. The ban is credited for getting instrumental music the limelight it deserves in the country. You can now listen to their music via all the major streaming platforms.
